Beautiful spring hikes in Éislek

Walking through the certified hiking region in the north of Luxembourg

Spring is the perfect season to discover Éislek’s hiking trails because of the mild weather and low number of visitors. The high plains and steep valleys, the wild landscapes and magnificent views are all highlights for keen hikers.

High in the far north of Luxembourg, Éislek is the first “Leading Quality Region - Best of Europe”, a distinction that was awarded in September 2022 by the European Ramblers’ Association. This certification recognises several features including the wild paths, the refreshment possibilities in the surroundings, and clear signposting.

Éislek Pad Lellingen - when nature is reborn

The Éislek Pad Lellingen hike starts at Saint-Pierre chapel, right in the heart of the village. With its rustic farmhouses, Lellingen is a typical village of the region. The best time to hike the Éislek Pad Lellingen is undoubtedly during early spring when a yellow stream of wild daffodils flanks the 11 km-long trail forming an impressive natural spectacle!

Since this area is highly sought-after, we recommend hitting the trail on a weekday to avoid the crowds and enjoy the flowers’ beauty undisturbed. Visitors should be aware that every year the village hosts an open-air art festival to celebrate Luxembourg’s national holiday on 23 June.

Éislek Pad Asselborn - follow the murmur of the stream

Hit the trail at the old Asselborn mill, which is now home to a hotel-restaurant and museum. Incidentally, in earlier times the only post rider station in the country was in Asselborn.

After passing the old slate mine to the Millebierg viewpoint, the hike continues across the high plane of Wincrange, where it joins a wooden walkway. On a clear day, hikers can see for several dozen kilometres.

The trail also crosses Trëtterbaach valley, known for its marshes and home to a diverse number of birds. The meandering stream, which is located two kilometres from the start of the walk, is another highlight.

Éislek Pad Bettendorf - on the trail of history

Bettendorf is located beside the German-Luxembourgish border in the Sûre valley. Start your hike by walking along the dyke which runs alongside the Sûre.

After a climb, the trail follows the route of a former battle line from the Second World War, which is lined with trenches in which gunners could take refuge. The entire Sûre valley served as the southern flank of the Ardennes offensive in the winter of 1944-1945. Consequently, it was the stage of bitter fighting, of which traces remain visible today.

Spanning 13 kilometres, the Éislek Pad Bettendorf is the perfect opportunity to get a taste of the region’s history while walking through nature.

Conzefenn Nature Trail - a whole programme

For a taste of Éislek, take the trail through the Conzefenn nature reserve, a marshland of forests, wet grassland and rivers. Discover the reserve’s lush flora on this two-hour hike.

The trail takes hikers over a variety of different terrain: wet meadows, tall grass, marshes and footbridges. Various nature preservation measures have led to a strong emergence of arnica, the well-known medicinal herb. With a bit of luck, you will catch a glimpse of the small pearl-bordered fritillary, a rare butterfly that thrives on the excellent living conditions around Weiswampach.

A special feature of this trail is the small lookout tower, which allows visitors to admire the beautiful scenery.

RB 6 near Bilsdorf - along the Upper-Sûre Lake

The RB 6 trail starts in Bilsdorf, a small village of 180 inhabitants not far from the Upper-Sûre Lake. The artificial lake is not only the heart of the Upper-Sûre Nature Park, but also serves to generate electricity and provide drinking water. During summer, it’s a popular recreational area. To avoid crowds, it is recommended to hit the trail during the cooler spring months.

From Bilsdorf, the RB 6 trail leads down to the lake’s shores which it then skirts until the Misärsbréck (Misery bridge). The bridge was named after an array of legendary misfortunes that are said to have befallen the region’s inhabitants.

The wetland around the bridge is a national nature reserve and bird sanctuary. It is certainly worth a visit, especially during spring. Stay awhile and you might spot some rare animals.

PU 1 in Bivels

The picturesque village of Bivels lies nestled in a river bend meaning that it is surrounded by water and faces steep valley slopes on the other side of the river.

The main part of this 7-kilometre trail follows the Our river. The second half passes on the other side of the Our on the German banks. Here, hikers face a strenuous climb, at the top of which they will be rewarded with a breath-taking view of the valley. It’s the perfect spot for a well-earned break!

The trail returns to Bivels, by crossing the Our again and following its banks until the end of the hike. It is worth noting that Vianden, with its restaurants and scenic castle, is just a few minutes away by car.
